What is liposuction?
A common misconception is that liposuction is a weight loss procedure. Liposuction is defined as surgery to
reshape your body's contour. A new phrase (or name) Liposculpture is gaining popularity for this procedure. Liposuction or liposculture involves removing packets of fat that otherwise cannot be removed or burned off by exercise. The hips, thighs, stomach and legs are the most popular 'problem areas' that people have liposuction for, but essentially every body part can be sculpted to your liking. Results are not immediate, 3 months after the procedure is when patients are expected to see the full effects of the surgery. Tumescent liposuction was a huge advancement; now anesthia is local not general which has reduced recovery times and lowered possible blood clot complications.

How popular is liposuction? Liposuction is the most popular plastic surgery procedure, more popular than breast implants, nose jobs, facelifts, etc. In 2004, approximately 325,000 liposuction procedures were performed and 90% of all liposuction patients were women. Adults 35-50 years old accounted for roughly 50% of all liposuction's. The next most popular age group was 19-34, followed by adults 51-64. From The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (2004 Statistics).
Hospital or Private Doctor's Office?
Currently, 50% of all liposuction procedures are performed in a private doctor's office - the other 50% in
outpatient hospital facilities. The trend is growing towards private doctor's office as the liposuction procedure is continually being improved in terms of the length of time the procedure takes, as well as the recovery from liposuction. Complications from liposuction are very rare as the areas that are operated on are not in proximity to vital organs. Almost all patients go home from their doctor's office or hospital the same day.
How costly is liposuction?
The national average fee for liposuction charged by ASPS member surgeons in 2004 was $2,223. Of course this amount may be higher or lower depending on where you reside; Liposuction in Boston, New York, Los Angeles and Miami top the most expensive cities list.
